  • @conorucd Determining how much of a language you can understand is no measure of how much of a separate language it is, this seems to be your main (and only) argument to claiming Scots is merely a dialect, yet it's a void and inaccurate argument to use.

Their are different forms of Scots like Braid, Doric, Orcadian, Glesga, Dundonian, Buchan and Lallans.

  • @conorucd Examples of similarities and differences can be in the following...

English "more/most" but in Scots "mair/maist" - and why sometimes they are completely different - such as English "cry/disgust" but in Scots "greet/scunner.

All languages can have similarities and differences but unless they are exactly the same then they aren't the same language.

  • Ok for people who don't think that's not a language just listen to Frisian language you be surprised how similar it sounds compared to scots language

  • everyone on this planet must agree: scottish i the best language in the world

  • sounds like german..

  • @soupdragon151 They spoke English because they were conquered by the English and forced to speak the language. Before that, the Irish came to the rescue of Scotland, and was able to unite the Gaels, Picts and Brythonics into one celtic nation Alba with one common Celtic language. There were even viking families given clan title. Gaelic was the official language of Scotland for centuries. So much of the so-called Scottish politics you speak of were manipulated by outside hands to damage it.

  • @segano1 sure, top voted comments prove everything! Therefore it MUST be a language, because you and top voted comments say it is! You and they are the ultimate authority on everything!

  • @segano1 if they aren't exactly the same then they're different dialects, not a different language.

  • @emmetor what nonsense and shows just how far nationalists will go to distort history to further their own ends, gaelic was the language of the highlands and islands, the lowlands spoke a mixture of brythonic celtic, old norse and english, one dying out after the other.

After dynastic struggles the Scottish court adopted English and Gaelic and the Clans were seen as the enemies and their language and culture, backward. It had everything to do with politics and all of it Scottish.

  • Scottish Gaelic was the one true language of the Scottish people, uniting the lowlands, highlands, the picts, norse, english and gaels: it was the language of education, and nobility, the language of the Scottish kings for centuries.

This is why it had to be broken by the conquerors, and this is why Scotland is still broken today - into highland/lowland/city/town/prot/catholic.

This is why you have Scots - how else could you plant Ireland, unless you were divided from them?
