The Destrehan Plantation and the River Road Historical Society recently welcomed Jean Noel Destrehan back to his home, in the form of an original oil canvas portrait, believed to be painted in the early 1800's by famed portrait artist Mathew Harris Jouett. The portrait was made available from Ms. Linda Jackson's personal collection, a descendant of Destrehan's sister; and with the help of the Azby Foundation, a long time supporter of Destrehan Plantation. The portrait will be showcase along side original documents signed by Thomas Jefferson, which appoints Destrehan and others to the Orleans Territorial Council. The unveiling was matched with a presentation to the Parish. The Destrehan Plantation is representative of many historical stories of St. Charles Parish and now residents can learn more about our past with a detailed, multi-part series, being presented daily on the parish website. The project was originally written by Nancy Tregre Wilson over 30 years ago for the Bicentennial celebration. Now the booklet has been updated and is being presented as a free download.
