  • @ 1:18 spray deck? PFD's?

I will be accused of being harsh/overcritical/coldhearted etc but if you are stupid enough to paddle without a bouyancy aid and spray deck then you deserve whats coming to you.

1st wear appropriate gear for conditions.

2nd Less than 3 should never be

3rd If in doubt, leave it out.

4th Always prepare for the weather.

5th everyone in a group should be able to self rescue.

    Its that simple.

Recklessness because of enthusiam is not an excuse.

  • Hmmm, I think maybe the footage of the kayak without spray decks was FILE FOOTAGE. Pretty sure they had them on during the storm... Stickwood, have you ever rolled a double kayak, in huge swells, against 80km winds? Kudos if you have. Get a clue... Shit happens-at least they weren't sitting on a couch somewhere developing heart desease.

  • "how can we get into trouble like this?" and no lifejackets. Well that is extreme...... Like skyjumping without a parachute.

  • Bob is talking abour 85km/h wind ? That is 9 Beaufort ! With my experience of 26 years in sea-kayaking I would not start a trip on open water, race or no race.

  • dont wear the right gear, pay the price, an why wuld they go out in them conditions with out the right gear,

  • @ntilley88 does it day they did not have decks, what were they doing without wet suits, total risk assessment fail. It does not just happen to anybody it happens to stupid people. What an unnecessary loss of life.

  • I don't know why he emphasized PFDs since they died of hypothermia and not being unable to swim from what I gather... Regaurdless, I'd have brought a PFD and a wetsuit designed for the temperature of that water...

  • poorly equiped , and probably not as skilled and experienced in high seas as we are led to believe..... the deaths are a terrible tradgedy, but being fit, and being equiped and experienced ane very different. spray deck, pfd's, dry suit, a solid eskimo roll = no one dead

  • Arrogance led to their deaths. Not very different from some recent deaths on Mt. Hood. Very experienced, great shape. Now they're dead.

  • @ntilley88 agreed

  • God blessed them... but there is not excuse for such chain of mistakes -No pfd, or apropriate suit, too much seld confidence, lack of support to such trip in such conditions, ...- , and mostly lack of common sense to carry on regardless the wind & sea conditions. Hypotermia kills without mercy.
