Ten ministers from Santa Clara County talk about California's Proposition 8. The ministers in this video are: Rev. Elena Frtichle of the Center for Spiritual Enlightment (San José), Rev. Dana Bainbridge of the First Christian Church of San José (Disciples of Christ), Rev. Michael Patrick Ellard of the Metropolitan Community Church of San José, Rev. Amy Zucker Morgenstern of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, Rev. Dr. Rick Mixon of the First Baptist Church of Palo Alto, Rev. Nan Swanson of the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto, Rev. Sky Anderson of the Metropolitan Community Church of San José, Rev. Dr. Diana Gibson of the Council of Churches of Santa Clara County, Rev. Jerry Fox of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, and Rabbi Melanie Aron of Congregation Shir Hadash. Rev. Victoria Ingram from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Los Altos also participated in our taping session, but we were unable to include her in the final video due to some technical difficulties.

  • are you a real preacher

  • Yes, I am the Senior Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of San Jose and the Vice President of the Council of Churches of Santa Clara County. I did my seminary training at the Pacific School of Religion and the Graduate Theological Union.

  • Tell me: Why don't these clergypersons understand that God sees homosexuality as a sin? It is in the Bible. You can state your case as eloquently as you want, but same-sex marriage is wrong. I have nothing against gays because I myself am a sinner. Repent.

  • Hi, I'm one of the clergyfolk in the video. I have a Master of Arts in Biblical Languages, and I take the Bible very seriously. I think the passages thought to condemn homosexuality have been misinterpreted, mistranslated, and in at least one edition, just simply made up by modern editors because the Bible doesn't say what they wanted. I teach a two-hour course of the Bible and Homosexuality fairly regularly. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested and I'll invite you next time I teach it.

  • Excellent! I love this clear rational thinking from the religious community. I'm a straight ally for gay rights and have become so disillusioned in the religious community. You give me hope.

    Blessings

  • Kudos on the video. I'm very anti-theist, but I'm glad to see a church(s) using some rational thinking and common sense.

  • Actually it's not just Christians who support equal marriage rights for all people. In addition to the Christian ministers from our area who oppose Proposition 8, there are also a number of ministers from other traditions who oppose Proposition 8 too.

  • i´m really touched about your words. In Germany there are so many parsons (i hope thats the right word) they said: to love same-sex is not wrong, but to live this is a sin. How do you can be whole with this comment and to be religious? It´s hard! I tell you!

  • should all these ministers lose their tax exemptions for getting "politically involved" or just the mormons?

  • why can't christian people from all walks of live just shut the f&^* up!!! everyones life is just between the person and thelord. lets respect everyone and if you want to marry the same then do it. why do people think you have to have the governments approval. its between you and the lord. i hate hearing people gay bash and i think everyone should be equal. if we took away hate and added respect and more love then maybe everyone would just get along and be happy rather they prefer something else

  • explain to me why jesus was nailed to a cross and experienced hate basically b/c he was different. its that kinda similar hate that most heterosexual christian people hold against homos.i thought we suppose to love. then i guess love DOES have limits. so in that case.what if god said heterosexuality was wrong and they had to turn homos. then i would laugh. its so easy for others to walk in shoes they have never put on. i am a hetero christian but im so sick of this topic. lets love and respect

  • Videos like this should remind people that not all Christians are against homosexuality.

  • It is great to see people of God expressing inclusive views. So often, the press cow-tows to the "Religious Right." Well, there are more of us on the Left who are believers and are tired of the Right dominating the discussion on faith. Our silence has let the Religious Right gain too much power. No more.
