Garryowen was origionally a quickstep written in the 18th cent Garryowen which is a part of Limerick, Ireland, It was adopted as a drinking song with it's present lyrics. Its first military use was recorded in the peninsula war aganist Napoleon by The Royal Irish Fusiliers. It was adopted by several light cavalry regiments due to the tune being ideal for trotting. It was used widely by The Light Brigade in the Crimean campaign. Latterly it became the march of The Liverpool Irish, a T.A. unit

@23929500 I would like to know what regiment, if any in particular, and when, if you please. I'm a fan of the Royal Army also. If it was in the 18th cent., I suppose they were simply light dragoons, but if later, perhaps Hussars or Lancers?
