A shōtengai (商店街) is a style of Japanese commercial district running along a certain street. Shōtengai often connect to the nearest train station.

Most suburbs and towns of Japan have shōtengai of varying size, and larger shōtengai may take the form of covered arcades that are blocked off to traffic. A typical shōtengai includes most of these:

supermarkets and grocery shops, restaurants, cafés and kissaten, izakaya, snacks (Japanese style bars frequented by men and usually staffed by women), pachinko parlors, barber shops, game/entertainment centers, post offices, book stores, clothing shops, convenience stores and other mom&pop shops.

  • Cool vid, PJ. I think you should've put it on your Kansai channel.

  • Thanks. It turned out nicer and more polished that I had planned. The vid footage was of poor resolution since I used my older camera and so I put it up on this channel.

Guess I gotta get more KansaiPJ viewers over here to NaniwaPJ~!

    ;-)

  • Sweet. Love the motion.

So wait, you had the cam in one hand and the handlebars in the other, right? Someone out there must have invented a handlebar camera mount already.

  • I'd been thinking about some kind of handlebar mount, but then it'd have to have some kind of shock absorbing system for the video to be of use, which would probably be prohibitively expensive...

  • I think I would take a ride a like that quite often if I lived in an area like that.

  • man am I jealous! Looking through the lens of the camera makes me shake with excitement from my love for the Japanese environment! Alas I am in no good Olympia Washington!

  • Thanks for watching and for your kind comments! Osaka really is a special place.

  • Hey PJ! I watch this video with mother NaruyoJapan. My mother lived in Osaka. And she says that she feels nostalgic for this video.

  • Hehehe.

  • I agree, cool video. If I where to do something like that I'd have to turn the sound off (I'd be swearing at the pedestrians)

  • How did you do yours exactly? Handheld or helmet mounted?

Few months ago, JamieDanger made some excellent bicycling videos using a homemade helmet mount.

Darnit though this might be enough to make me buy a bicycle...

  • :-)

  • Thanks!
