Oh come on you people, humans in general are full of some rather bizarre traditions. Take the Queen's Guards in London who don't move, or any of the numerous war reenactments, or the food throwing festivals across Europe, or the running of bulls festival in space. Any of those could be considered equally or even more ridiculous. The fact of the matter is people need events to spice up their boring lives. Hence we have traditions, celebrations, etc.
