I need to be Macedonian: the Identity Crisis among the Slavs of FYROM

The Slavs of FYROM want to be called Macedonians. This would be like calling the Turks 'Ethnic Thracians'.

During the Ottoman times, the name Macedonia did not exist, but its territory was divided into two vilayet: Monastir and Selanik. Most of FYROM was in the Vilayet of Kosovo. Prior to that, it was called 'Kingdom of Prilep', ruled by a Serbian king Marko. He followed after Serbian King Stefan Dushan's empire collapsed. Prior to that, the name and territory of Macedonia were in Greek-speaking Byzantium and the territory of FYROM was actually in the theme of Bulgaria.

What is the reason behind their zeal? Can they understand Macedonian names? Can they read Macedonian coins? Did the Macedonians spread the Greek or Slavonic language? Did the Macedonians contribute to Greek or Slavic civilization?

Enjoy the Bulgarian music! The Slavs of FYROM perfectly understand Bulgarian, since it is their language.
