Sorry for the LOUSY video quality!
OK... I'm officially certifiably INSANE.
I took a broken down 1200xl & 1050 disk drive, ripped their hearts out, replaced them with mini itx components, DVD burner etc. Why do this? Because I want to play Atari! (The hard way)

  • the dvd burner is usb?

my first idea was to put a full pc (or mac mini) in my 1050 drive but i cant find any small motherboard in chile (yeah. i live in chile)

  • Yep... Its USB.

I've seen a mac built into an 810 drive before. Very cool idea!

  • Did you destroy or damage the original case when you replaced the innards with PC parts?

Don't get me wrong- it seems that what you've done is quite nice, but I thought the 1200XL was one of the rarer 8-bits, and I'd hate to think of one being permanently destroyed for the sake of a Wintel mod :(

  • I did manage to find another 1200 case that had only a working keyboard on it to match up with the innards of this donor 1200 which had the keyboard broken as well as a few keyboard stand offs, so the 1200 world is still in balance with even 1 extra working 1200 in it.:)

  • Just a thought.. how did you interface the keyboard on the Atari with the PC?

  • I didnt use the original atari keyboard.

I actually placed in a usb laptop style keyboard that measured pretty close to the original spec though I did have to route out somewhat.

  • @noelio1974 That's a shame. The 1200XL keyboard is one of the best keyboards I've ever used. I'd love it if some uberhacker would create a device that'd let me use my 1200XL as an external keyboard for PCs. (Maybe something over SIO or cartridge?) I, of course, would not want to sacrifice a 1200XL for such an endeavour :)

  • Nice work

  • I have the ST that doesn't have the composite or RF out. It takes a standard RGB color monitor but it has a different connector. The SC1224 monitors do go for cheap on ebay but shipping makes it a $40 buy. I have an adapter that turns my Amiga 500 plug into a standard 9 pin. I was hoping there would be the same for the ST. Thanks

  • Hey Vulcanjedi,

I'm not certain but ebay might be a good place to look for converter boxes and such, which should change the chroma/luminance signal to RGB.
