Self-Screening for Cancer

Many women avoid cervical cancer screening and the required pelvic exam, says Hunter College and CUNY School of Public Health professor Heidi Jones. "It can be somewhat invasive and unpleasant," says Jones. "There are new tests that we can do ... for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV), the cause of cervical cancer — opening a way to potentially use self-collected specimens for cervical-cancer screening."
