It is unfortunate that there is a body of learned men who want to classify the Venedi/Veneti/Eneti as either Celtic, Illyrian, Slavic, Etruscan or any number of ethnic groups when they were not. There were indigenous, established traders and merchants. They were the "boat people" or the "river people". The word 'vened' is not an Indo-European word; there is no latin translation but the word today in Finnish still means boat. The word 'aelf' still means river in Sweden. Venedi = Tolkien's elves.
