The title suggests it's a sea shanty but it's not a working song at all. I find it a rather sweet song of maritime parting. The last verse might be melancholic or uplifting depending on your world view!
Accompaniment played on a vintage Wheatstone 'Pinhole' Aeola concertina.

  • Thank you. Your comment is much appreciated.

  • Thank you KernowWella, I didn't know that. Interestingly, Googling "Padstow leaving shanty" returns just a single result (or will until Google indexes these comments of course!)

  • The best source I have for the song is this discussion thread at Mudcat (threadid=18455)

  • this is a really beautiful video. I have favourited it.

  • This is known as the Padstow Leaving Shanty in Cornwall (UK) but cannot confirm if the origins lie there.

  • I always thought the songs meaning had many colors. The main of which was the giving of a fallen sailor back unto the sea.

I'm not having much luck tracing the origins of the song. If you find any history on it, please send me a message. :)

  • Great Song and Singing!! Very fitting Video too..

    You Did a Fantastic Job!!!

    God Bless
