This is an update to the video on the 1/2 inch diameter "Air Battery, Barber Pole Battery Works " which I made 13 days ago. I have used it and let it go dry and used it again. I even fitted up a new joule thief circuit with 3 white leds in parallel on the secondary for it.
I also made the same kind of battery on a bigger pipe a day after the last one. It is made with magnesium ribbon wound around a 1 inch copper pipe.

So here, I can show both of them working.
The 1/2 inch one is completely covered with masking tape which keeps the moisture from changing either way.
The 1 inch has only a thin spiral of tape covering the magnesium to hold it in place. So this one can really get dry.
Today I used the 1/2 inch one with the tape then added water, and since the 1 inch was too dry to light the leds I sprayed the battery right away.
I am liking this battery more and more.
Just the fact that it can get dry means I can slow down the decomposition of the magnesium.
More time is needed, but Lasersaber showed his after solid on, and that is a great comparison to this.
The sound is choppy but it is the best I could do.

Good work! Is that just regular tap water with no salt added? I know Lasersaber is using salt in his water but, remember my first NS coil where someone gave me the bright idea to add vinegar to the soil? I got a really really great output...for a while...then...nothing!!! If you are doing this with an occasional watering with regular water, I think your results are really great.

Oh I kept forgetting to add that info.

I used Mg sulphate (epsom salt) in the water. I think it will be better than NaCl because of the presence of Mg in the salt. I don't know if it will work, but I needed something to draw moisture into the cloth under the tape.

I don't know if it is even doing that job, because this morning that big one is bone dry again. (0.1mA) and the smaller one with tape all over it still pumps out 19mA.

    Thanks for asking.

Very nice work, I personally like them to dry out so as not to be constantly eating away at the mag, just add water when necessary. I wonder how you're mag is holding up on the taped one? I'm glad to see them doing well with no carbon, great job.

  • @PeteIDLFour

I like the idea to let them shut down too. I have done enough run down tests to be ready to just have this around ready to be used.

I cannot really see the mag under the tape. I spiraled the tape over it so there are 2 layers of tape. :(

In fact the copper is working better than the carbon rods.

They are welding rods and perhaps not porous enough...Lasersaber got porous ones on purpose, so he probably understands why.

  • @jeannacav

I got some really porous carbon rods for my new airbatts and the power seems to be just a little bit higher but at a very big cost to the magnesium. I used the same solution and materials as the originals except the carbon, of course and after about 6 days they look in worse shape than the originals lol :-). So we'll see how long these new ones last.

  • @PeteIDLFour

Thanks for confirming this, pete. My 6 inch long carbon rod/Mg battery looks terrible. It stopped working pretty soon after I started using it , and even though I can still see magnesium under the tape, it has broken in many places.

but the 3 inch one I made like lidmotor's mosquito still works, so the C/Mg isn't all bad.

  • ever try a cement battery i have had good luck with one ive been lighting a 1 watt led since july 23rd 2010 continously

  • @jeannacav

The funny thing is with these more porous carbon rods I can actually hear them bubbling when i wet them down, and the crystalization on these looks the same as Lasersaber's. I think i'm going to try out a copper pipe and mag air battery next.

  • heya jeanna, i suppose you will go on to combining the stubblefield coil with this setup?
