The Last Two Million Years, Reader's Digest History of Man, 1973, 303. Hieratic is a "simplified form of hieroglyphs the so-called hieratic, or `priestly' script -- was developed for speedier writing on papyrus, & was used mainly for religious texts." Another style of hieroglyphs develops from hieratic used in 7th century BC. "This was the demotic or `popular' script, in which the pictorial quality to the hieroglyphs was sacrificed for faster writing. It was used up to the 5th century AD".
