I have watched this movie over and over. Still very highly ranked in my film collection. I always felt in actuality the defective Stasi agent would have been executed.

Far too many of my fellow Brits think a film isn't worth watching if it's not in English, or if it has subtitles. More fool them for missing out on gems like this. Three fabulous German films show the best and worst of the human spirit: M, Goodbye Lenin, and this, which beat Pan's Labyrinth to the Oscar for best foreign language picture in 2007.

Incredibly, Hollywood is willing to re-make the Millenium sickness trilogy and they don't even dare to make this treasure go to the masses. Bravo for the Germans. This is a truly achievement on filmmaking history and it's European!!!! Wie danke Ihr sehr :-)

Totally agree. Best movie ending ever. This movie clearly leads the way to adult intelligent film where budget, special fx and other adornments have no room. Every man can change and make the choice of being a better person. I do love the movie and its message of hope even under the worst possible conditions
