Russia pushes development of Kuril islands

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called on officials to keep visiting the disputed Southern Kuril islands, and vowed to boost development in the remote region.
His comments came after Russia's Defense Minister visited the islands, which are also claimed by Japan. Addressing the Russian Security Council, Medvedev stressed all the visits to the islands aim to promote the region's development.
He said, "This is Russian territory, which needs to develop along obvious lines, just like other Russian territories. I want all members of the Security Council to remember about the need for development of this faraway territory of our country. "
Russian Defense Minister, Anatoly Serdyukov, arrived in the Southern Kuril islands to inspect military facilities and check on troops' combat readiness and living conditions. Japan's Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with Russia's ambassador to Japan, denouncing the trip as extremely regrettable. Serdyukov's visit comes a week before Japan's Foreign Minister visits Moscow.
