"A compilation of no-look passes, behind-the-back moves, and circus shots. A reminder of what made him so mind blowing in the first place." SPORTS ILLUSTRATED (March 2007) on this highlight mix.

"The definitive biography of Pistol Pete Maravich" ESPN
The "essential" Maravich biography. The New York Times

The mix brought to you by the new book MARAVICH and the Pete Maravich Memorial Basketball Camp.

Pete averaged 44.2 points per game. That remains an all-time NCAA record. But it was HOW he played that burnished his legacy. Welcome to the show.

Special thanks to Wayne Federman and LSU Basketball.

  • Maravich played before the advent of the three-point line. Years later, former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots he took. Brown calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot (5.8 m), 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, lifting the player's career average to 57 points per game.

  • its funny how pete wore 23 before Jordan yet everyone thinks Jordan was the first to wear it

  • His dad ruined Pete and the LSU team. Press was a horrible coach - only one winning season during Pete's tenture.

  • What a lot of guys probably don't know either is that many of you guys who may have played high school basketball did some drills called the Maravich drills. Almost every high school and college basketball teams incorporated the drills with their practice.

  • @kylegforeman

did he calculate how many points he would have scored if blacks were allowed to play in the SEC back then, too?

  • @hbrennan14 Who the fuck EVER said he was the first to wear it???

  • Another thing to consider is the time era. Showsmanship and entertainment was just as important as anything. Not only was he a great scorer and passer, but he was a great entertainer.

  • @hmercutio

Maravich was such an incredible dribbler that very few defenders could stay with him. He was also a tall player (6'5") with a very quick release allowing him to just shoot over players who managed to stay with him. Look at his shot at 4:30. Nobody today could stop that shot.

He also took a lot of shots. His father was the coach at LSU and basically let him shoot as much as he liked. Some rough math indicates he took about 50 shots per game.

  • poetry in motion

  • @bordertown oh never-mind this guy is insane I didn't know he already averaged 44ppg, that doesn't even seem possible. where was the D?

  • @hmercutio

    Prove that it's bullshit then.

  • @kylegforeman yeah right that's bullshit and you know it
