Placido Domingo (b.1941) Born in Madrid, Spain, Domingo is a Spanish tenor who currently holds the record for the most tenor roles performed: 130 in his repertoire.
Here, relatively early in his career, he sings 'Che gelida manina' in a 1967 live performance of La Boheme in Vienna. (Transposed down a half step)

  • A true baritone could never have pulled off a 40 year career as a tenor, transposing or otherwise. Placido is definitely a tenor. This is actually one of the better performances of him...the more Domingo live performances I come across, the more flaws I find with him. Every note seems to be a struggle for him. He gasps, cuts, the top notes short due to lack of breath control, the whole thing is a mess. There are some exceptions of course my description holds true for most of his live performance

  • Shut up. You use the same insults way too much. All you're doing is creating tension between yourself and others. You're not hurting Placido Domingo, so what's the point? A board of opera critics just nominated Domingo as the best tenor in opera history. Deal with it. Your venom doesn't do any good to anyone. So write constructive criticism rather than making people angry, sound good? This is where you say:" Yes, that sounds good" or you shut up.

Sorry to those who witnessed that.

  • "Artistic Prostitution", you've said it all. Amen!

Domingo is the greatest example of artistic prostitution -and marketing medriocrity, I'd add.

  • The real tenors in the heart of people are Schipa, Kraus, Wunderlich, Bergonzi and Pavarotti, all with wonderful voices, technically AWESOME and full of emotions!

  • @GermanOperaSinger "The whole thing is a mess"? I normally agree with your comments but must take you up on this. Domingo's big fault is that he never took a break. He spreads himself a little thin sometimes (and the top was never his selling point) but his breathing is immaculate. And live he was extraordinary, in spite of the technique.

  • @AnryK2690 Is not C.

    È un SI NATURALE.

  • @GermanOperaSinger I agree with your assessment.. He sounds tight.. a lot.. but he doesn't push( if he did, he would have damaged his voice) It was never easy for him on top.. He never sounds like he is singing down into his voice. Still this performance is credible. right now he is singing baritone roles and doe s NOT sound anything like a baritone..

  • @Phabathanbob Domingo is a professional singer - he makes money off his singing - and as a regular opera goer I am a paying customer. Therefore it is my OBLIGATION to give an honest opinion about the product I purchase - in this case - his singing. I always try to be fair in my comments and in the past may have gotten a bit carried away - but don't ever tell me I don't have the right to voice my opinion.

  • @GermanOperaSinger

He was too professional to cancel.

You are very quick with your criticism. What have YOU done, GermanOperaSinger, that puts you in a position to make so many disparaging comments about any singer who has managed to make a living and a name?

  • @AnryK2690 it is not a c, it was transposed down a half step

  • Bravissimo!!! Wonderful. Unexpectedly great C from Domingo. Great Maestro.

  • Beh, diciamo che Domingo in Boheme non era il massimo. Fuori ruolo. Tenendo presente che parliamo di un tenore tra i più longevi e timbricamente squisiti di ogni tempo.
