I remember watching this at the time. Her acceptance speech was terrific. I'm sure that she also acknowledged her Puerto Rican heritage. Despite her Oscar, I regret that Hollywood never fully took advantage of her enormous talent.

Very true. Rita herself moved to NY post Oscar and appeared on stage replacing in The Miracle Worker and other dramas of the day. Her next film was The Night of the Following Day in 69. And she excellent in that.
The best is that lovely Rita is still out there. Still acting & performing and vivacious as ever. Viv Rita!

"My BEADS". There was a big brohaha at the time. The Ritz was billed as an ensemble as such Rita had to be considered a 'Featured Player' as opposed to a lead. Rita wanted to be in the latter category an felt it was unfair to the real supporting actress, as she says, "whoever that may be."

That is Joe Smith, one half of the vaudeville comedy team Smith and Dale. He was 91 at the time. Dale had passed away a few years before. This was the pair that The Sunshine Boys was based on.
BTW, the 'nurse' is none other than Bernadette Peters who had appeared in a prior skit in said costume.
