  • @OhHeyItsLou are you still using Fedora, and what distro would you say is the best?

  • @mythreligion I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell right now. The "best" distro is all a matter of preference really my advice would be to try out several until you find something that feels like home.

  • Just a side note, distro watch doesn't indicate new users rather, it counts unique visits to each website (which doesn't say much of anything). Its not a good barometer.

  • @SuperCoding You're right very good point however it's really the only thing we have at the moment to give us an idea of who is using what distro as flawed as it is.

  • I switched to Fedora from Ubuntu. So much faster and productive. I'm currently a .NET dev and using Mono on fedora has been a much better experience so far.

Great video, glad to hear Fedora is working under the hood. Ubuntu used to seem like it just worked out of the box. Now Fedora feels that way and Ubuntu does not.

Also you should turn on the classic mode and show that. Some ppl rly like the classic layout but don't know Gnome3 has it.

  • @zezba9000 Fedora 16 has brought the project to an even higher level than F15. In my opinion Fedora is the mercedes of desktop linux at the moment. Fallback mode is nice for those that prefer the classic "gnome2" desktop however it won't be around forever and eventually people will have to embrace gnome-shell. Good suggestion for a future video though, thanks!

  • While I understand the premise behind Gnome-Shell I have had nothing but bad experiences when trying to use a mouse and keyboard with it. LCD touch screens are just not practical currently and an All-in-one PC is just that a new system something I am not really in the market for.

However each release the issues with a keyboard and Mouse seem to get much less

  • @minecraftmessage Ubuntu uses Unity not Gnome-Shell

  • i do like Ubuntu 9.04 thats what i use when using... is there a why to make fedora to work or look the same :)

  • Too much Windows for me. I am deep inside the matrix and don't think i want to take the pill. Thanks for the video.

  • It might look pretty, but functionally speaking it's a horrid nightmare. I rather use KDE now or XFCE.

  • @ElderSnake90 In a follow up to this... ironically, considering this video... I was going on my experience of Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu. I just installed Fedora 16...and it's actually quite a bit faster and smoother. What the hell Ubuntu! It always does this to me :S

  • I went from PCLinuxOS '07-->Samlinux-->ubuntu (about 10min), back to PCLOS-->PCLOS Gnome version, then to fedora (1 day), then to Mandriva, then to ubuntu (another 10min), then settled with Mint 9. Thanks to Mint, I no longer cared for emerald/compiz. Been staying with Mint 10 ever since.

Agreed that synaptic is really good--fast to open and love the user ratings. Mint 10 is so perfect that I only spend about 10min to tweak the visuals after install.

WinXP is still my main pc, for Sony MVS.

  • Great stuff Lou, i know this video is a bit old but I found myself watching it anyway after watching your kernel vids. Subscribed :)

Now I agree about Gnome Shell, it's really quite lovely and general performance and smoothness is great. I do wonder though, how do you find the speed of say, scrolling the gnome-shell drop down menus? Like say running your mouse over the "Me Menu" and the sound menu etc. Might just be me but they seem rather laggy at times. Otherwise, it's a great performer.
