  • Yes, he might have a nice accent, sounds like south, can't tell east or west, but easily London area. Either way, not a very memorable voice is it? Rommel had a more impressive voice. But, even in his real voice Patton was more memorable

  • I agree with you... Patton's voice was more memorable... But I would any day chose Montgomery over any other allied general in WWII... And Rommel over any other Axis general...

  • They arrived late for the First.

They joined the Second halfway through.

  • @UStheFA The Imperial Japanese were insane by western standards, but there's no denying they were some of the greatest fighters off ww2 because of this "insanity"

  • Monty- "If we are attacked, There will be no retreat! If we cannot stay here alive, Then we shall stay here dead!". Monty was the man who broke Rommel and sent the Axis forces in N.Africa into mutiny, It was the end of the Axis campains there generals in Africa,Russia were betraying orders, El Alamein, Stalingrad the turning point of the war.

  • @UStheFA you need to stop fighting battles on the internet and get a life.

  • @UStheFA I don't know why the Yanks keep going on about Market Garden..While Arnham fell far short of expectations it wasn't the total defeat that some seem to think it was, it advanced the Front in the sector by around 90 miles and inflicted around 32,000 casualties on the Germans in exchange for 17,000 Allied casualties.

In comparision the Battle of Hurtgen Forest cost the Yanks around 33,000 casualties in exchange for 28,000 German casualties and only gained a few miles of forest.

  • Japanese soldiers would also jump into your foxhole at night and try to slit your throat. So you get the idea you dont want to sleep. The Germans would not play the sick min-games that the Japanese would. And the Japanese would torture British, American, and Phillipino P.O.W.s. For you to call that war a joke gets my blood boiling.

  • @Tommyfungun: The tommy gun. (Thompson) The Americans in the pacific were a joke? You trying to sound educated is a joke. The war in the pacific was fucking brutal. The Japanese would fight to the death and would do suicidal charges. You have no idea how many lives were lost in the pacific. Have you ever heard of the battle of Okinawa asshole? That was our bloodiest battle that made up drop the A-Bomb. Ever hear of kami-kazis? No? Look up Englands role in the pacific. Japanese kicked their ass.

  • @UStheFA Because you have a larger army than us. Why? You have a larger population than us. You have more land. It is a joke when you try to act as if Britain wasn't trying hard enough, when we have a small population in comparison to you. Absurd.

  • When Monty did beat Rommel, he used massed charges at long ranging German guns, oooo, with a little left hook. HE SUCKED! He was a frontal assault type of General in the teeth of German field-craft. MASTER OF FRONTAL ASSAULTS, he was a plotter (wouldnt move until he had more of everything than Rommel), a conservative who would not move until all his ducks where lined up! ...I run out of breath and typying ability going on about this guy!

  • @TheLiberalKnight: Saved the day at Bastogne and beat Monty in the race in Sicily. Patton was heading across in West France on the way to Bastogne and got their quickly and broke the seige in the bulge. How about present day General Patreaus who did a good job on slowing down the war in Iraq. Norman Schwortzkopf The first commander in the first Gulf War. MaCarthur, the one who saved the British's asses from the Japanese. US always has good Generals.

  • @UStheFA Monty had some spectacular fails but the ones he got right he got very right. He stopped Rommell, who had up to that point been considered invincible, from taking British African territories or India. Patton was a decent general, but of course America is shit at producing good generals, so you always overblow his reptuation, as if he is the second coming of Christ or something. Monty planned D-day which turned out to be a massive success, E. Baldy took the credit for it. As usual.

  • @TheLiberalKnight: How about Monty's brilliant plan for Operation Market Garden which worked great? I dont know why you guys look up to Monty, he sucked! He thought the US couldnt even fight until Patton BEAT him to his main objective in Italy and made him look like a FOOL! Patton was way more aggresive and actualy saw what was going on in a battle. Monty hide miles behind his lines and did not make a move until he knew he had superior numbers. Not to mention Monty was almost fired in WW2.

  • @roadwarrior3 Sorry but using intelligence to good effect is a sign of a good commander and not something Monty can be criticized or belittled for.

Besides which, by your argument I can belittle Rommel's victories in Sonnenblume or at Gazala because he had better intelligence than the British at the time - because the Italian's were intercepting British Radio transmissions & the detailed reports an US liason officer with the 8th Army was sending to Washington were being intercepted by the Axis.

  • @xKCBEx Fuck off, America has never produced anything other than mediocre generals. You just like to think you have produced great military heroes. Everyone knows Eisenhower took credit for Montgomery's D-day plan, which worked spectacuarly.

  • Montgomery was a 2nd tier general compared to Rommel. Montgomery knew Rommel's ENTIRE Order of Battle in every battle he engaged Rommel from British Intelligence which broke nearly all of the German's Enigma Machine Army Codes. While Rommel's Army Intelligence did often break British Army codes, Rommel's awareness of Montgomery's plans was nowhere near as thorough as Montgomery's awareness of Rommel's plans. Montgomery's "genius" is pure crap. INTELLIGENCE .. INTELLIGENCE ... INTELLIGENCE

  • didnt know he had a speech impediment

  • @TheShorelessC glory boys!!

  • Oh dear Monty, sort your beret out chap, you're a Field Marshal. Front rim just above the brow, beret slanted up so back rim is resting on the back top of the head. Right side is pushed down over the ear. It really is just basic soldiering. A good and proper beret is the only thing that separates us from the animals and the French.

  • my grandad was in the 8th army in north africa but its a shame i never got to meet him he died before i was born.. R.I.P grandad and all others that fell in the world wars

  • @ikorodu0807 you ignorant fool he fought in the trenches he knew more than anyman the cost of life during battles he was a cautious general and predicted the exact casulty rate for el alamien...he planned overlord and guessed d day plus 90 days they would be ath the rhine he was out by one day.........You need to understand all british officers in the good ol days were of the aristocracy but dont give them to much shit them fuckers are wat won us two world wars you turd

  • my fravourite commanders are rommel walther model patton and montegomery:)

  • This reaction came from the Netherlands (dec. 5th, 2010): Very memorable speech of a great figure in history. His typical voice, the short sentences, his optimistic views, the down-grading of the problems (and the enemy) worked as a shot of adrenalin for the soldiers. And had thundering success. Such a speech is (more than 70 years later) a fine example of how to inspire others, in getting a difficult task done successful. I like Great Britain. Good work to place this video on the internet.

  • @TheShorelessC the war was already over in the first world war britain had already won they arrived in the last couple of months left in the war.

  • @lankinator24 Fact No. 1 : Erwin Rommel was never a member of the NSDAP and cannot be called a "Nazi" General. Fact No.2 : Because of his involvement in the 20 July Plot against Hitler he was forced to commit suicide to avoid a Court Martial.

Fact No. 3 : His Father was a mere School Teacher and he was not a member of the Aristocracy or "Upper Class" . Fact No. 4: Montgomery's sucess was due to superior manpower and material and not to any "Tactical genius.

  • Good old Monty

  • @ikorodu0807 sooo, instead of a great, tactical genius, you would rather have a Nazi General who was also from an upper class background?
