The second in my series of bass reviews... this Bossa OB-5 is completely original and currently sports brand new DR Sunbeams.

Sorry for the over saturated video. I have no control over the Vado HD's exposure and in trying to capture my black shirt it is apparently overexposing everything else. I'll wear a shirt next time and see what happens. For those of you interested in the production of this video, here are the details:

Bass recorded straight into my first generation Digidesign Mbox. Audio recorded in ProTools. Video recorded with Creative's Vado HD. Audio and Video edited with Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 (the $100 version).

I am not using a bass amplifier or speakers of any kind. No signal processing expect for some ever so slight limiting with Izotope's Ozone plug in (just to remove any clips over 0db).

Creation process - Record my voice (using a small Audio Technica clip-on condenser) and my bass simultaneously using ProTools. Take the .AVI video straight from the Vado HD along with the .WAV file bounces I made in ProTools and edit them together with Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9. Let Vegas render a "NTSC DV" standard .AVI file. The final step (for uploading here on YouTube) is taking the .AVI render and running it through DivX Pro 7 using the "720p" setting.

If I had a prosumer camera with 2 audio inputs this would be a lot easier!

Enjoy!!!

  • It really has a nice sound, good balance in low & clearence. What preamp it's installed with ?

  • @adurgaram - Using the stock Bossa preamp...after this video I had the preamp changed under warranty (it was malfunctioning). The "new" preamp is a little bit different but sounds almost identical.

  • nice bass, what do those usually run for? how do you like DR strings? I am currently using EB slinkies on my Fender Jazz but thinking of changing out to something different.

  • I really like DR strings. The only other string I use are the EB Slinkies! For the Jazz try the Sunbeams or the Lo-Riders. I think you'll like them. You may have to buy Sunbeams online. Not many stores carry them.

An OB-5 (new) would run you about $2500. I bought mine used for a great price. $1200 is a typical used price.

  • @chjohnst - I love DR strings but somehow on this bass, the worn out Elixirs sound a little better to me. I love Slinkys too. Try the DR Sunbeams. As far as the bass...new, you are looking at over $2500...used, maybe $1000 if you are lucky.

  • Oh yeah, I own a fretless OB-5 as well, which has a great growling sound. It also misses the coil-switch. Maybe it's something Setozaki thought of later?

  • @Momo - sounds like you have a strange beast, maybe it's an OB-5 body with UJB neck and electronics. My particular OB-5 is kind of special as well. It has a pretty slim neck compared to others I have played.
