Robeson sang this for the construction workers on the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Unions are the only way for working men and women to win a decent wage and benefits.

True. One of his last messages was to IWW leader Bill Haywood. It read, " Goodbye Bill. I die like a true blue rebel. Don't waste any time in mourning. Organize... Could you arrange to have my body hauled to the state line to be buried? I don't want to be found dead in Utah."

In 1957, at a vast conference I was compere-ing, Robeson sang this old labor union song. In 1980, when the BBC Radio 3 gave me 75 minutes in a program called "Man ofAction", to talk about myself and the music I liked, I chose this song of Robeson's (after M\artin Luther King's "I've been to the Mountaintop" segment from his last sermon the night before he was murdered). The BBC said several thousand letters had come in just about this Robeson song! It's one of the all-time greats. Dipak Nandy
