Dr. Dmitry Oleynikov explains how new advances in minimally invasive surgery can fix chronic acid reflux or "GERD." The surgery fixes a valve in the esophagus and can lead many patients to a life with more freedom to eat normally and without reflux medication. • I am a 15 year old male, 5"1' around 150lbs and have had acid reflux since i was about 5 i would say, as long as i can remember, i dont remember not having it. I have acid about every 10-15 min while im awake and it comes all the way up to my mouth, a full mouth full.

what can i do to help this?

  • Thanks for your question. Our physicians recommend first seeing your family doctor. Your doctor may refer you to a physician or surgeon who specializes in reflux. There are a number of tests which may help determine the cause of your reflux - tests such as an upper GI, EGD, manometry, or pH probe test. Once your doctor determines the cause, he or she should be able to determine whether your symptoms are a result of reflux or hiatal hernia.

  • It is an operation of last resort. Only if nothing else works.

It is the Gold standard of reflux operations, We dont have anything else right now that is better. Some say the Hill is better but only a few doctors do that operation up in Seattle Washington area. Then there is the esophyx tif. It is a new procedure and I have read about a lot of failures with that too. I hope you tell me I am all wrong, I to suffer from this, and am looking for an answer.

  • Thank you for your post. We've had excellent results with the Nissen fundoplication with or without repair of a hiatal hernia and have provided tremendous relief to hundreds of patients suffering from the effects of GERD. Please reference this article from a peer-reviewed journal concerning the excellent 10 year outcomes of this procedure.

Broeders JA, et al. Ten-year outcome of laparoscopic and conventional nissen fundoplication: randomized clinical trial. Ann Surg 250(5):698-706

  • Dr. Oleynikov says there is data for the last 20 years with very good outcomes. These new procedures are even more promising.

    Thank you for the question.

  • my quality of life has gone downhill so much I dont even feel ike getting out of bed anymore. sometimes i wished i just wouldnt wake up, my life is ruined by this surgery. EVERYthing that i used to enjoy i now cannot do because of this. i need help because no one wants to touch another surgeons surgery. i wished i would have had the endocinch procedure instead. please help me.

  • after posting I do realize that not all doctors are alike. My relux surgon probably didnt knwo what he was doing. My question is, will anyone please help me , i want my surgery reversed. it has ruined my life, I would rather sleep standing up then deal with the problems i have had since having this surger. Please give me any advice on having it undone via lap surgery. i do not want my abdominals cut, i have a bad back and need strong abdominals to lift things.

  • yea about 3 years ago i went to the doctor and had a camera stuck down my throat and i cant remember what they were called but there were white circles on my stomach. I have went to the doctor and i am taking a pill right now that just makes the acid not hot but it still comes up.

  • I applaud your effects. I really do. But please be honest. This surgery does not last. I have read about this, and talked to doctors at the Mayo Clinic, and learned that if this operation last 10 years its considered a success. (I have read that 60% fail at 6 years. You then are probably going to need another operation, that probably will not last as long as the first one. It may have a lot of side effects, AND MAY NOT EVEN WORK AT ALL.
