Ahhh Brocken. I have a personal fondness for this cat, not only was he the first World Hero I ever selected, but he's a freaking super robot! It's like ADK combined M. Bison with Dhalsim. I have fond memories on the SNES World Heroes port -- just killing off my opponents with Brocken's flying attack in the death match... not only do I beat them with this move but it also sends Brocken flying in the spikes/flaming ropes/electric ropes. Haha, yes I was an evil kid.

I decided to finish off all the WH characters with this upload tonight (6/16/06) and there's another special reason why. Yesterday was my cousin's 18th Birthday. I love him and to me he's like the little bro I never had. So anyway I visited him today and we got talking about the good ole days where I used to beat him in Street Fighter II Turbo all the time with Sagat. He never could outmanuever my low and high tiger fireballs. Keep in mind the kid was only 9 years old or so when we played (circa 1997).

'You were such a sore loser back then,' I told him yesterday, laughing.

'Yeah...'

And then he said something that even *I* (the master of unlock -- I mean, the master of remembering every last silly detail) was shocked to hear.

'Hey you remember when I figured out to do that robot guy's flying attack?'

It totally caught me off guard. 'Ah yes. World Heroes 2 -- that wannabe Street Fighter game right.'

He nodded.

And I just smiled. I remember we were playing WH2 and I was mad because I didn't know how to do Brocken's flying attack. In the original it was jump + forward + punch.

My cousin randomly figured out it was jump + forward + punch + kick to fly across the screen.

Awesomeness.

Brocken rules, and so does my little cousin. Happy Birthday coz!

  • @somebutthead Chances are he might have been inspired by those guys.

  • I think this guy should have been called "Robo Brocken". Not just because of the obvious fact that he's a robot, but because there was a character named Brocken who was from an old 80s anime cartoon. He vaguely resembled this guy, only his skin was all pale and he was not a robot. He was a choujin wrestler.

  • @destroyahdes While this and Street Fighter II were released shortly after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the film because quite popular even in Japan back then, and had Nazi references that influenced many of Japan's game designers in creating things modeled after them. Smash Daisaku from Gunstar Heroes; however, was most likely modeled after the Dark Ogre general from The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy, because Gunstar Heroes character designer HAN was a fan of The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy.

  • @1983parrothead The Terminator part sure makes sense, because Geegus, another World Heroes character, is also modeled after a Terminator character, T-1000.

Nazis were a hot topic to Japanese video game developers, as well as manga and anime companies.

  • Brocken was most likely named after Brockenman or Brocken Jr. from the Kinnikuman series.

But for his look and character, he's mostly inspired by Rudol von Stroheim from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, because they are both known for having bionic bodies.

For Brocken's Terminator look in some parts, that was added, due to both characters being cyborgs with even red eyes seen behind their shades. ADK incorrectly thought Arnold Schwarzenegger was German, like others that Brocken was influenced by.
