A partnership between Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) and SNV, a development agency from the Netherlands, has yielded an effective mango project in Burkina Faso. With world markets for mangoes compressed, producer groups in Burkina Faso along with FLO and SNV saw a significant opportunity for Fairtrade to improve the lives of local people. SNV and FLO worked with producer groups to build local capacity and engaged locally-based organizations to assist producer groups and learn how to distribute the Fairtrade Premium more equitably, and how to ensure that projects are environmentally and socially sustainable.
Fairtrade Premium money is being used to procure equipment to dry mangoes, acquire tractors and drill boreholes to bring fresh drinking water to poor communities.
