Cantiga 299 "De muitas maneiras"

Cómo Santa María se apareció a un fraile y le mandó que diese a un rey una imagen de Ella que traía.

"De muchas maneras Santa María favorece a los que tiene por suyos."

Sobre esto quería mostraros un milagro, que os pido que me oigáis con buena atención, pues por él os enseñaré a servir a la que es dechado de bien.

Esto sucedió a un rey que servía a tal Señora en todo cuanto podía y se complacía grandemente en loarla; por eso le sucedió lo que os diré.

Un hermano de la Orden de La Estrella llevaba en el regazo una imagen de marfil de la Virgen que nos guía con su Hijo en brazos, (Santa María de España) en la que tenía mucha fe.

Una noche, acostado en su lecho y en duermevela, vio venir a la Madre de Dios que le decía: "No tienes por qué llevar esa imagen que llevas, que cometes un disparate llevándola; ve en busca del rey y dásela; me complacería mucho que se la dieses y harías bien en ello."

Dicho esto, se alejó, y el fraile se lo contó a los otros hermanos, que le replicaron: "Eso es un sueño que no tiene sentido."

Y él, al oírlo, se afirmaba en su decisión de no dársela al rey, pero después de repetirse tres veces esto, vino Ella a decirle con gran despecho:

"¿Cómo has osado no dar al rey lo que te mandé darle, que yo te lo agradecería?
Dáselo; si no, saldrás perjudicado."

El hermano, antes del tercer día, fue a contar esto a su maestro, que le dijo: "Fue estúpida tu renuencia; no te conviene esa imagen, que le va bien al rey; por eso te aconsejo que se la des, que él sabrá honrarla debidamente, y tu búscate otra más apropiada."
Y el fraile se marchó en busca del rey, que estaba oyendo misa, lo encontró y le dio la imagen, de lo que él se alegró mucho en verdad, y, levantándola con las dos manos, le daba gracias por lo sucedido y bendecía su santo nombre, diciendo: "Bendita seas, amén."




How Holy Mary came in a vision to a friar and commanded him to give an image of Hers which he wore to a king.

"In many ways Holy Mary does merciful deeds for those She claims as Her own."

Concerning this, I should like to tell you a miracle, and I pray you to hear it from me willingly. Through it, I should tell you how to serve Her who is filled with goodness.

This happened to a king who served this Lady as well as he could and took great delight in praising Her. I shall tell you what befell him because of it.

A friar of those of the Star (This is a brother of the military order of Santa María de España, founded by Alfonso X, whose emblem bore an eight-pointed star with the Virgin and Child in the center) wore around his neck an image made of ivory of this Lady who guides us, holding Her Son in Her arms, and he firmly believed in it.

One night as he lay in his bed, neither fully awake nor asleep, he saw the Mother of God who said to him: "That image that you wear, do not continue to wear it, for you are unwise to do so. Go to the king and give it to him, for it would please me greatly if you gave it to him, and you would act wisely."

When She had said this to him, She immediately went away. The friar told the other friars of this, and each one of them answered: "This is a dream which does not mean anything."

The friar, when he heard this, decided not to give the image to the king. However, afterward, Holy Mary came to him three times and in great displeasure said to him thus:
"How could you be so bold not to give that which I commanded you to give to the king, and I should thank you for it. Now give it to him; if not, you shall suffer for it."

The friar, before the third day passed, revealed this to his master, who replied: "You were foolish to delay. Such an image does not befit you, but it would be fitting for the king. Therefore, I should advise you to give it to him, for he will honor it greatly. Get someone to go with you."

He went at once and found the king hearing mass and gave the image to him, and he was very pleased with it.
He raised it up with both hands and rendered thanks to Her for this and blessed Her holy name, saying: "May you be blessed, amen."
