"Wasure-naide (忘れないで)", meaning "Please remember me forever", is a tragic love song of a young lady parting a beloved male friend. This song was originally prepared for Teresa Teng (鄧麗君) to sing. Teresa passed away before Kohji had this WASURE-NAIDE come to life.

Triggered by the advice of a legendary guitarist James Burton (who was the leading guitarist for Elvis Presley and is still active), Kohji recorded this "Wasure-naide" and another song "Kikasete (聴かせて・・・)" on a CD from Crown Record in 2005 in Japan.

At Teresa's 10th memorial ceremony in the same year, Kohji enthusiastically sang WASURE-NAIDE in the graveyard park where Teresa is sleeping in Taipei, in the presence of Teresa's brother Jim Teng and many others.

Kohji has responded to the great expectation of Araki Toyohisa (荒木とよひさ) and Miki Takashi (三木たかし), the song writer and the composer, respectively.

Kohji is currently fascinating the audiences with mainly Elvis songs, in around Tokyo and many other places in Japan, including his hometown Mori-machi (森町) in Shizuoka prefecture (静岡県).

The following are the Japanese lyrics, together with my English translation.

Anata-no ai-no fukasa-ni oboretara
(When I am drowned in the depth of your love)

Ashita-ga mienaku-natte shimau-kara
(I will not be able to see tomorrow)

Konomama sotto oyogasete
(Therefore, please let me go as I will)

Anata-wa hokanimo mamoru-monoga-aru
(You have still others to keep)

Tatoe kono-koi ga kanashiku owattemo
(Even if our love ends up disconsolately)

Wasure-naide watashi-no-kotowo
(Please do not forget about me)

Toki-ga nagarete darekani deattemo
(Even when you come to know someone in future)

Wasure-naide kokoro-no sumi-ni
(Please remember me in the corner of your heart)

Mou yume-no naka-shika aenai-kara
(Because I cannot see you anymore except in the dream)

Anata-no mune-ni tobikomu yuuki-yori
(Instead of selecting to burst into your heart)

Futsu-no jinsei itsuka erabu-kara
(I would select my normal life someday)

Omoide-dakeja wakasa-wa tsuzukanai
(We cannot keep up youth just based on the memory)

Kanashiku-naruhodo ai-ga miete-kiata
(I can depressingly feel the end of our love)

Tatoe chigau-hito koishite irutokimo
(Even when you are in love with other lady (person)

Wasure-naide watashi-no-koto-wo
(Please do not forget about me)

Donna-mirai-wo anata-ga sagashitemo
(No matter how you search your future)

Wasure-naide saigo-no yakusoku
(Please do not forget our last promise)

Mou anata-no-sobani iarenai-kara
(Because I cannot be around you anymore)

Wasure-naide watashi-no-koto-wo
(Please do not forget about me)

Mou yume-no-naka-shika aenai-kara
(Because I cannot see you anymore except in the dream)

  • Could "Unforgettable" be an appropriate title?

Thought about it for the whole night and got the inspiration in the afternoon, when I remembered Teresa's posthumous CD was entitled L'inoubliable (French for Unforgettable). Thought Miki-san could have used the same title in Japanese to commemorate his beloved friend. If so, the song would be unforgettable in more ways than one.

    Wasure-naide watashi-no-koto-wo

(Please do not forget about me)

As you can clearly realize from this part of the lyrics I prepared above, this song is about the “request” or “wish” that she (Teresa) should never been forgotten. “Unforgettable” is not appropriate.

Some person uses “Time to say goodbye” as a subtitle of this song, but this is not suitable for this song.

  • @masami43 But that's exactly what the word "unforgettable" means: Cannot be forgotten!

I also find "Time to say goodbye" confusing.

  • @gctlcda

    Dear Thomas,

I am not willing to give a Japanese language lesson here, but Wasurenaide (忘れないで) does not mean "Cannot be forgotten", but is a REQUEST or WISH, as I repeatedly mentioned above.

Wasurenaide (忘れないで) is a short expression of Wasurenaide kudasai (忘れないで下さい) = "Please do not forget".

  • I have recently discovered a Mongolian Chinese singer who sings this song very beautifully in Japanese. She is a newcomer on the Japanese scene, her name is Oruriko Rajifesu a sweet and beautiful woman with a voice that can make her a star. There are several videos on YouTube of her singing 3 or 4 songs (オルリコ-忘れないで (Wasurenaide)) on the motohiko0123 channel. But she will never replace TT.

  • @hiloviking

Yes, Oruriko is certainly a good singer of this Wasurenaide.

  • Even I do not understand Japanese, I can sense the feeling from the singer; plus the help on translation make me enjoy this song that much more! Thank you.

  • @masami43 OK, thx, sorry for your trouble. As always, arigato gozaimasu!

I see, didn't realize that the "kudasai" is implied. V polite, as Japanese tend to be. Good trait for sure in this less than civil world.

  • @arisansecret Def second to this. The song is just lovely!

The only shortcoming is that Teresa couldn't sing it...

  • Hello, Masami-san. Found this song yesterday, the version sung by Miki, and fell in love w/ it right away. Asked George if he knew an English translation for this lovely song and he referred to you, of course. Am so glad that I found your upload just now and read the beautiful lyric! Many thx for being so reliable in helping non-Japanese to appreciate Japanese songs even more!

Like Koji's rendition, but just can't help wondering how Teresa Teng would've sung it. Beautiful and perfect, as always!
