  • Why Collis was laughing when he asked the question?

  • don't forget that these percentages are not of profits, they are GROSS. How many companies give away percentage of gross to creative people? I come from the music business, artists get a tiny percentage of NET profit usually - which is often zero - and often the record companies make sure there is no NET profit - fancy video clips and recording sessions all come out of the artists share. 40-70% of GROSS income is massive by any measure. 90% will send you broke real quick.

  • Thanks for the reply. It all comes down to price points and business models. As discussed in this interview, Envato has to actually make money in order to survive - and it must make a profit. It has to be a price point that is competitive, fair and provides enough income so they can continue to develop the sites and reinvest into their company. The risk of being too cheap or giving too much of your gross income away is that you go broke.

  • Take a look at zoomer, they give authors 90% of all profits (It's a stock photo site) , I like themeforest, don't get me wrong, Collis is brilliant, and the quality of work they offer is great, I just think the authors should get paid a little more. At least 50% at the bare minimum since building flash sites and xhtml sites are a little more involved than stock photos.

  • Look at istockphoto - start at 20% and go way up to 40% - and some people on istock are doing massive numbers. I can't see istock offering 70% of anything to anyone.

  • Yeah to gain 70% you have to sell 300,000 dollars, and I am dead serious, that is the number, barely anyone reaches that, maybe 10 if that.

  • 40% in the beginning, you can get even 70% of the revenues. What are you talking about? Say it or not Envato's Marketplaces are the best on this business.

  • When is the part 2 of this coming!

  • In the forum, people will say, they are lots of amazing items in GR. you can use the $5. Riiight! I know. You're Right. There are amazing items there. Do I really have to use that $5 for a graphic item I don't need? You probably going to end up searching for graphics for an hour to save your extra $5. So I'll just leave there? After one year, the money goes to Envato. Boooooooo!
