  • @dobberdoss If Olympic swimming works, why haven't we seen an Olympic swimmer prove it in brain surgery?

  • @dobberdoss (cont.) Aikido is a Budo, a martial way of life. It is about being ready without getting ready. It is about reacting to an attack that you did not expect, yet you're there, in the moment. The multiple attacker and weapon awareness, the soft focus built into all Aikido (and sister arts), is entirely useless in the artificial environment of the ring, where instead you play out fantasy scenarios rolling on sterile ground with no "good samaritans" to randomly kick you in the head.

  • @dobberdoss Aikido understanding of "real" circumstances is actually closer to that of a reality self-defense school, than something from an MMA tournament - an artificially sterile claustrophobic environment with an artificially expanded time limit, artificially imposed goals, artificial system of counting win and loss, and artificially fixed number of attackers.

When in reality an Aikido tech. will bounce one's head off a car, in the ring it will uselessly push them away. Ring is not reality.

  • @dobberdoss You cant use aikido in MMA. Small joint locks are banned so the aikido practitioner has a small arsenal at his disposal.

  • most impressive!

  • @TokenSamurai,

It's not so much about 'looking for a fight ', it is more about proving the theory and techniques under real circumstances. All MA's want this or what's the point? There's a saying,"Knowledge is no use too anyone sitting on a shelf ". Good debate. Thanks for your constructive replies

  • I can't defend Aikido or any other style, because how it's taught and hows it's learned is everything. Maybe the dojo you went to was crap, maybe your too linear in your learning. Who knows, but you are right, to know if a style works, you have to see it in action. In the old days dojos were challenged by other dojos to determine these debates, but because Aikidoka don't look for a fight you'll have to do the challenging. Find a reputed Master and challenge his dojo and you'll find your answer

  • @TokenSamurai ,

NO, what I see in MMA is Brazilian JJ. C'mon now, I will say it again. I ve done aikido and BJJ is nothing like it. What I want to see is one of Aikido's TOP guys come into the Octogon and totally play with their opponent, fending off every attack they make, bringing in the wrist locks, the throws, the everything that is Aikido. No more excuses!

Prove it works with a real opponent who is really attacking. C'mon guys, you can't be this scared of a real contest?

  • @dobberdoss

You have seen it in MAA, it's called Jui-Jitsu. Aikido derives from one of the oldest juijitsu's in Japan and it follows the exact same principles as any other juijitsu. What throws people off when they first see it is all the philosophies Ueshiba layered on top because of his religion. Peace and harmony, thats why a lot of people take it to begin with. complete self defense. But if you want to fight with it, you can, just toss out the religion and you have good ol fashion juijitsu.

  • @TokenSamurai,

Two years is more than enough for someone with over 20 years previous MA experience I believe. Now, again I come to my main point. You say it now makes sense, Then can we see it proven in MMA please? If aikido works then it should make a mockery of MMA, EVEN in a defensive manner. Yet here we are nearly 2 decades on from the beginnings of professional MAA and STILL not one Aikido expert has come in to prove it's worth. Imagine the kudos for aikido if proven?
