If you think of working docks, you almost immediately think of grey dock cranes. The main crane shown here was made by the famous crane builders Stothert and Pitt of Bath, and was one of four at Southampton Docks that were recently demolished. The requirements for dock cranes have moved on with modern containerization and weights exceeding the 10 ton limit that these were built to carry. One of the cranes had actually buckled whilst in use, resulting in them being condemned and sealing their fate.

It was hugely relaxing sat atop one of these sleeping historical giants watching the sun go down, whilst the dock was busy and loud around us.

  • I spent most of my childhood in Southampton and remember the cranes that have now been replaced by appartments near the remains of the Royal Pier.A poet once decribed cranes as looking like' tall drunks 'from a distance.i like that!
