I love how people see one person do a kata, without knowing what the circumstances were, and judge an entire organization based on that one person's kata. Perhaps he was asked to perform it slowly? Perhaps not? I don't know, I wasn't there.
I'm not sure if this is JKA rendering or not, but Kanazawa makes no attempt to bring his hands to knee level in the final cat stance block. This is seen in old JKA videos. The final cat stance is quite difficult to keep the back straight. From my view, I see it as Kanazawa not being flexible enough to perform the final difficult cat stance move.
I started in SKA 30 years ago and it was tough, repetition of techniques and twice yearly special trainings. Hangetsu seems to be a favorite of Ohshima judging from his public performances. This is one of his black belts. (Ohshima is in the foreground.) I see no focus or power here. Some of the techniques are thrown away. Now look at Kanazawa's rendering of it. No comparison.
its difficult to understand ohshima karate vs jka karate or any other of the branches of shotokan....i think the best thing to do is to judge a person by how many times they go to class to learn and stays for years and years to train....
I'm a JKA Shotokan and this Hangetsu version is totally different on how we do it. I didn't see any proper body contraction and expansion along with proper breathing during execution of techniques. It is a slow but powerful kata but I didn't see those characteristics in here. But then, your shotokan is different. So quite good for me.

I meant, your Shotokan might be different and it's not quite good for me.
