Chinese Farmer Grows Baby-Shaped Fruit

In the classical Chinese novel "Journey to the West" an imaginary fruit in the shape of a baby gives those who eat it immortality.

Northern Chinese farmer Hao Xianzhang is not hoping to live forever by turning fiction into fact, he hopes the fabled fruit can sell.

The 45-year-old has cultivated 18,000 baby-shaped pears in his orchard this year, hoping to find a new way to make a fortune.

A mold made out of plastic applied to young pears for a six-month growth period finally provided the desired results.

[Hao Xianzhang, Fruit Farmer]:
"What I remember most is that other people called me crazy. They said I was whimsical and it was impossible to grow baby-shaped fruits. They told me to stop wasting my time and money."

The idea to shape his pears first struck Hao some six years ago, when he saw jelly shaped in different forms at a local supermarket.

He tried to apply the molds to his pears, but the results were disappointing.

After consulting agricultural experts, he crafted his own casts.

The farmer said he had calculated the fruits could help his earnings go up a hundred-fold.

[Hao Zhonghua, Interested Resident]:
"My boss sent me over to see if it's true. Now I see it really is true and find it really amazing. If it's true we will order some and sell in our store."

Encouraged by his success, Hao has decided to also introduce other shapes and fancy wrapping at higher rates.

The entrepreneur has visions of taking over international markets.

He plans to cater to Western tastes with Biblical characters and Charlie Chaplin-shaped pears.
