Molasses Making http://www.floydfolks.org & http://www.littlefamilyfarm.com 1-540-808-2880 - floydlcfgroup@gmail PO box 179 Floyd,Virginia 24091 -- Making Molasses an old Appalachian Tradition on the Woods farm in Floyd County Virginia 11-13-10. I had the good fortune to visit the Melvin and Ruth Woods farm on the day they were making Molasses same way it has been made in these Appalachian Mountains for several hundred years. It was exciting to see and hear the stories associated with this very old art and skill of making Molasses. Many interesting stories including the origin of the Cane Mill used at the Woods farm. Ruth told me they used to get their Molasses from the second son of Mr. Childress the well know Preacher and origin of the book " The Man That Moved The Mountain".( If you like Appalachian and Floyd County Virginia history I recommend reading this book) . When the Childress son could no longer make Molasses he gave the Cane Press to the Woods and they have been making Molasses every year they have had the press.

The woods also live on the Farm that has been part of Ruth Woods family for several generations. Her father Mr. Garfield Radford now 100 years old lives with the woods. He was out watching the molasses making operation when I was their and you can see him in the video. He is the smallest of all the fellows around the cooker. I also still see him come in the Blue Ridge Restaurant ( Blue Ridge Restaurant video http://www.floydbusiness10.com )with Ruth and Melvin on occasion .

Molasses used to be the primary sweetener used in days of yore until refined white sugar pushed it to the back of the shelf. It has a distinctive flavor that brings extra sparkle to spice-laden recipes such as gingerbread, fruitcake, cookies, toffee, baked beans, and sauces.

Interestingly enough, molasses now costs about twice as much as refined sugar. Along with industrial alcohol and rum products, molasses can also be used to make yeast, cure tobacco, and in cattle feed.

Molasses has somewhat more nutritional value than does white or brown sugar. The process by which it is extracted and treated with sulfur results in fortification of iron, calcium and magnesium. Some natural health food experts still advocate its use for ailments of the stomach.

  • Wonderful to see this God Bless.

  • @guntruckLT Hi Glad to see you enjoyed this. It is a dying tradition as not many folks grow the cane to make the molasses and it is a lot of work to boil it down - the fresh made can be really good. These folks have a least 3 generations on the farm and maybe 4 the oldest had 100th birthday last year and I he was in the Blue Ridge Restaurant , Floyd Virginia -last week with his daughter.

  • We are in the Appalachian Music community of Floyd Virginia - I am also making a small museum display of some of my computers available to the public in the Village Green. We are on the "Blue Ridge Parkway" & " The Crooked Road - Virginia's Heritage Music Trail" . A lot of good things here - drop in and see us sometime. Also if you are biker this is a big stop over for riders on the Blue Ridge Parkway - Dave

  • Ruth Woods father Garfield Radford had his 100th birthday party the 13th of this month and its was a really big event. So sorry I missed it as the article in the Floyd Press with photos was most interesting. Hope to be at his 101.

  • Very interesting to hear the connection to Robert Childress, The Man Who Moved a Mountain. (The old press used to belong to his son.) Obviously love of the Appalachian lifestyle was passed from father to son, and son to friends! Thanks for sharing this tradition with the viewers. Cheryl

  • The visit to the Woods farm in Floyd County Virginia is always enjoyable and seeing the molasses making was special treat. I was able to purchase a few pints and won't be able to use all of them. I you would like one - come to the Floyd Professional Center , Village Green, Floyd Virginia 540-808-2880 and you can purchase one there until they are all gone.
