You should do both sides !!! and sand flush for proper fix NO SHORTCUTS or you'll be doing it again
as far as your advice to follow crack and make void is correct, you can then use zip ties to fill in the voids and then sand with 60 grit paper add more plastic if little voids appear (air pockets) then use soldering iron to smooth out the area make sure to get adjoining plastic molten so they will bond to each other
@erikinhawaii idk if u still need to fix fairings, but liquid abs (plumping supply) works really well, if you want it hard do it in layers, soft or bendy lay it on thick.

$10.00 for putty from the autoshop add a little extra hardener lay it on thick wait for it to dry and sand then paint, alot simpler

@wsvitak The plastic welding fixes the crack structurally, you can then fix it cosmetically with a flexible filler.
