My Ship - (Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill) - jazz piano lesson
This is a wonderful - but under played standard. Music is by Kurt Weill. It has lots of opportunities for re-harmonisation.
The leadsheet I used is in Sher Music's 'New Real Book Volume 2' p.235
This was a solo piano midi file that I produced some time ago - and had annotated it with quite a few comments. Just to see what would happen, I imported it into Band in a box, and had it produce a bass and drums backing using their Real Tracks option. There is just a little conflict between my left hand and the bass player. I have put the original solo version - without bass and drums backing - on my website as both an audio and midi file.
This video is available - free to download - at http://www.bushgrafts.com
The transcription is on my DVD - details on my website.

  • Very pretty arrangement!

  • @RHutton2710 -- That's certainly an interesting thought...but I'm not sure it's correct. After all, Gene Kelly singing and dancing "Singing in the Rain" is the ultimate version. It is unimprovable, I think. But now we're getting into Plato's territory. I think he was the guy who said that images of perfection existed in the mind--but it's been a long time since Philosophy 101.

  • @harveyardman: ultimate versions only ever exist in the imagination. Who's ever seen the ultimate performance of 'The Cherry Orchard'?

  • I loved Doug's version of MY SHIP, and used it as an accompaniment to my singing of the song. At Doug's suggestion I posted this version above. Hope all of you who love this beautiful song enjoy! - Terry (terrynyc)

  • A wonderful laid-back playing of this great standard. Congrats to you and thanks to You Tube.

  • Fab!

  • Are you on SLSK? I'll hook ya up ^.^

  • Haven't heard her version, although I've figured out that it's on the Berlin to Broadway with Weil album. Trying to find it on line so I can hear it. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Margery Cohen you've tried?

  • This is one of the greatest songs ever written, IMHO--enormously poignant music and even more poignant lyrics...very nice version of it here, although I have yet to hear the ultimate, the version that gets out of it everything that it has in it.
