Monthly programs for students, with a family component, have corresponded to a decrease in risk behaviors and an increase in signs of healthy development in this rural area in Wisconsin.
The Palmyra-Eagle Area School District collaborates with numerous local agencies and organizations to offer its "Prevention and Wellness Service (PAWS)." The effort won a Standing Up for Rural Wisconsin Schools, Libraries, and Communities Award in 2011 from State Superintendent Tony Evers.
The district's Ruth Hammiller gave these off-the-cuff, informal remarks about the program on March 7, 2011.
Other partners include the Jefferson County Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Abuse (ATODA) Partnership Council, Jefferson County Wraparound Project, Cooperative Educational Service Agency 2, Jefferson County Smoke-Free Coalition, and the Jefferson County Delinquency Prevention Council.
