In their previous league game, United had been on the end of a 5-0 thumping by Newcastle. Just a blip said Alex Ferguson. A week later, the blip got much worse. And it still wasn't over then. United also lost the game against Fenerbahce in the Champions League and their next league fixture to Chelsea.
They had previous at the Dell too -- United had lost there 3-1 the season before and it was their grey kit that infamously got all the blame. There's a bit about that at the start of this video. Ian Darke narrates, Steve Banyard commentates.

As an Israeli I'm glad to hear so, but he's retired 6 years ago at the age of 34.
He was a good player, a member of the Israeli football Hall of Fame, he was chosen as the number 10 best middlefielder in the history of the English premier league by The Times newspaper, and even got nicknamed "Ha-Kosem" (the magician in Hebrew) but he's more of a talky talky than a great footballer :)
Today he's a commentator in the Israeli sports TV channel and a manages in the youth team of F.C. Nesher.
