An overdose of blood is almost fatal to this little horse-fly (Chrysops sp.). Video filmed with a Canon Powershot A570 and a +8 diopter close up lens.

  • Do some flies inject poison of any kind?

  • @swarmbrood

Horse-flies and deer-flies (and mosquitos too) inject very small amounts of anticoagulants that prevent the blood from clotting while the fly sucks the blood. Some people may develop strong allergic reactions to these anticoagulants.

Horse-flies and deer-flies can spread bacteria of e.g. tularemia and anthrax, diseases which can be fatal. Actually the risk of getting any disease is quite small, as child I was bitten by horse-flies trillions of times, never got any disease...

  • That's some cool stuff. Really interesting!

I bet the fly was regretting the six- course meal it had. ;) It was like, "Ugh... I feel so fat!" He he he.

  • Other fly wants some blood too. Come on share lol
