Prince had considered the idea of an instrumental jazz-funk album ever since he recorded his first tracks with Eric Leeds for his 1985 side-project, The Family. In late 1985-early 1986, he recorded hours of instrumental music with Leeds and other musicians from his band, Sheila E. and musicians from her own band, as well as members from Wendy & Lisa's families. From these sessions, Prince compiled an album called The Flesh, supposed to be released by an eponymous pseudo-band, but the project was abandoned and its concept lightly modified to become Madhouse.

All instruments on "8", the first Madhouse album, were performed by Prince except for the saxophone and flute parts which were performed by Eric Leeds. The albums consists of instrumental jazz-fusion tracks. A remix of the track "Six" was released alongside with the b-side "Six & 1/2", composed by Leeds and featuring Atlanta Bliss on trumpet.

  • THank you ...thank you ...thank you. I have looked for this song for over 20 or so years. I got this tape while I was in Korea but I lost it and could not find this Album anywhere...let alone remember the number of this song. I can truly say that this song moves me and I can die content knowing that I've found it,

  • I was hoping this was the track I loved the most....I had both LPs Madhouse 8 and 16....but sadly they were lost in a fire.. sniff sniff. I was great to hear it again after all these years. so thx for posting. xo

  • For all you fellow enthusiasts, If anyone is interested I have music files for ALL Madhouse albums and ALL 3 extended version of 6, 10 and 13 and ALL 3 b-sides 6 1/2, 10//12 and 13 1/4. Just inbox me your email address. I will send them to you for F R E E. They are m4a files but I know iTunes will convert them to mp3 files.

  • @knightworx Actually, by this point Prince had disbanded the Revolution. 8 featured Prince, Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss. 16 featured Prince, Eric Leeds, Levi Seacer, Jr., Sheila E., Matt Fink and John Lewis.

  • Is Prince on drums in this? Obviously the horn is Eric Leeds, and as far as I'm aware brass is a family of instruments Prince has never mastered (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'm just wondering which bit is actually played by him.
