Sometimes as soon as the end of February the first queens can be seen flying from spring flower to spring flower, even though they usually appear by the middle of March. Bumblebees are important pollinators of both crops and wildflowers
Nowadays all bumblebees are put into one single genus: Bombus.

Hommels zijn grote en behaarde bijen en tamelijk nauw verwant aan de honingbij. Bij het vliegen maken hommels vaak heel erg veel lawaai en trekken zo onze aandacht. Bovendien zijn hommels geliefd, omdat ze tot de eerste insecten behoren die we in het voorjaar te zien krijgen. Soms al eind februari zie je de eerste koninginnen op zoek naar sneeuwklokjes, blauwe druifjes, krokussen en andere voorjaarsbloeiers.
Tegenwoordig rekent men alle hommels meestal tot één geslacht: Bombus
