"What does it mean, chaos gathered into a sudden bronze sweetness, an October flourish, and then that moment denied, turned acid, disassembling, questioned, rephrased?"
Tisn't an easy one to explain. Often, it would be used to express astonishment, shock, bedazzlement, or wondrous awe.I must say i was quite taken by this piece, and I'm sure it would have been passed over many numerous times, in my ignorance, had it not been for your comment.
Tis? I wonder if my penchant for archaisms (eg. "well-nigh", "hitherto") might have rubbed off on you a bit. ;-)
I see now what's with the emoticon; it's supposed to look like eyes agog.
As for the Great Fugue, I couldn't agree more. If one were to designate the single greatest piece of chamber -nay, scratch "chamber"- music ever written, it seems to me this may well be as strong a candidate as any.
Finaly, it is a curious thing trying to define words such as "greatest" or "genius". Some people would use it simply to refer to the mere subjective apeal of a work, or even just it's size. Some people think John lennon the greatest musical genius who ever lived (hence using the words "greatest and "genius" in the same sentence). I have no idea, you tell me what "greatest" means.
To begin with, I wasn't saying which symphony of his was the greatest, I was simply making an observation on the master's own opinions on his works. secondly, as far as symphonic writing is concerned, surely the Eroica.
