Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth tells you what you need to know about the cell nucleus.

The Nucleus
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The nucleus is where most of the DNA in eukaryotic organisms is stored within a cell. Within the nucleus is the nucleolus, where ribosomes are made. The nucleus is surrounded by a double outer membrane with pores that allow for the movement between the cytoplasm and the nucleus.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55gFY7YfUHM

Functions of the Nucleus
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Long strands of DNA in the nucleus combine with special proteins to form a long fiber called chromatin. The chromatin is then used to create chromosomes. The number of chromosomes in each cell depends on the species in question.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55gFY7YfUHM
