[ Hedge Maze ]

The hedge maze was one of the most beautiful and secluded spots in the entire kingdom. It was Selena's place of solitude, always safe and welcoming no matter the season or the weather. It was a place where she could be alone to think, a place where she could take a break from her princess duties.

Being a princess she was always cooped up indoors. Whenever she was not learning about politics or science, she was improving her piano skills. Whenever she was not attending her duties she was in the library. The only time she was outside was when she had her polo, horse riding and archery lessons.

Selena first discovered the hedge maze when she was seven years old. She was hiding from her tutors who kept pestering her to recite her piano piece. Accept this time she was trying to look for a spot outside. Walking through the Royal Gardens she noticed a narrow path accomplished by vertical hedges.

Curious to know where the maze led to, she entered and weaved in and out of the many paths until she reached the center. She gasped in awe; it was the most beautiful sight she'd ever seen. A marble fountain resided comfortably in the middle. It had a sculpture of the Greek Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite who was carrying a vase that had water pouring out of it. By the time she was nine she knew the maze like the back of her hand.

Selena's thoughts came to a sudden halt as they reached the center of the maze. She hadn't even realized that she had been walking all this time. "The moon looks lovely tonight, doesn't it?"

Selena looked up at the sickle-shaped moon and the bright stars littering the blue midnight sky. "Yes it does" she replied as she sat down on the rim of the fountain's basin. Lights glimmered from beneath the surface of the water, illuminating her figure.

"Princess you wouldn't know anything about a map called The Pearl would you" Charles asked taking a step behind her.

She scoffed, a very unladylike and un-Princess-like thing to do before she stood up and turned around. "I have no idea what you're talking about" she replied as she folded her arms stubbornly across her chest.

A chuckle escaped his lips as picked up the small stone next to his shoe and threw it into the fountain causing little rivulets to appear. "Oh Princess you're a very unconvincing liar. Your tutor William told you. He told you that there are 10 pieces didn't he? " He arched his eyebrows and stared hard into her eyes.

"Even if he did tell me about it, that doesn't mean I believe it exists, the pieces are long lost" she said as a matter-of-factly.

"Really?" he said casually, "then what do you have to say about this?" he pulled out a folded piece of parchment from his pocket and opened it up to reveal a part of the map.

Selena's brown eyes widened in shock, her mouth agape like a fish out of water. "But-where did you?" She stuttered nervously.

Before she could finish her sentence, he cut her off. "I also happen to know you have a piece of the map". She gulped down the knot in her throat. "You either tell me where that piece is and no one gets hurt" his hands grabbed onto her wrist, his grip unbreakable.

"Get your hands off me!" She shouted stepping on his foot. He laughed at her actions and pulled her closer.

"Now, now, is that any way to treat the Captain of the Dark Serpent?" he sneered; a sly smirk crept across his face as he watched her eyes widen in horror.

"Captain Charles Kennington?" her breath caught in her throat.

"The one and only, milady. Now, where is the map?" he demanded.

"The map doesn't belong to you and I will never hand it over to you," she said dangerously before she plundered her free fist into his stomach with such a force, he stumbled backwards into the fountain. Selena quickly gathered up the heavy layer of satin skirt and ran back through the path to warn everyone of the impostor.

Moving his wet hair that plastered against his face Charles snarled furiously as he raised his pistol in the air and released the signal for Richard to release the canons.
