That was a bullish* call. UNC was lucky they got Marquette in the title game though, because they lost 67-59. UNC-Charlotte would have kicked their asses. I would have loved to have seen the Tar Holes and Dean the democRat go down to them.
Side note...even though Butch Lee was named MVP, UNCC's Cedric Maxwell scored the most tourney points with 123.
You need more of this. Coach McGuire went out onto the court to check the height of the scoreboard before Lee threw the ball. Al said, "Okay, Butch, let it go, you can't hit it.
Then after Whitehead made the bucket there was a big brouhaha at the scorer's table. Charlotte's Lee Rose argued like a southern attorney. Al McGuire came on with "salty, tugboat language."
Then the officials said the basket counted. McGuire emerged from the crowd, and strutted to midcourt, fist raised in victory.
Look like he got it off in time by the unofficial tv clock (which can sometimes 1/2 sec behind actual clock). still, looks like it was out of his hand in time... However, it did look like basket interference but that's a tough call to make LIVE if your not sure.
Charlotte should have won, think of where they could be today if they won the national championship... Niner fan for life

This should get as much props as Christian Laettner's shot in 1992.
