With no clear winner from last month's elections in Iraq, the country has been left in political limbo.

And as politicians jockey to form a government, there are increasing fears that a lingering political vacuum could lead to a surge in violence.

In the last 24 hours, there were three separate attacks in and around the capital - the deadliest of which was a gruesome reminder of past sectarian violence and executions.

The two smaller attacks occurred inside Baghdad itself, with four mortars landing in the heavily fortified green zone. So far, there are no reports of casualties there.

The second attack occurred in the Saydiyah neighbourhood where a bomb blast killed two people and injured another.

But the deadliest attack happened in the predominantly Sunni district of al-Rasheed, just south of Baghdad.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from Baghdad.
