The way my granny made it, she would use the left over ham bone after all the meat was stripped and just throw everything in a big pot of water for 3 or 4 hours. No sesonings at all.

you dont add the ham in last it is the ferst thing besides the peas that go in for flaver! unless you want bland split pea soup?
