Featuring a fast F 2.0 lens, and an unusually large 1/1.7" CCD image sensor, the S90 is currently the image quality king among compact (pocketable) cameras.
Great review, I've been looking for my first real camera as I currently have a Fujifilm J10, which pretty much sucks, though I haven't got the cash nor knowhow for an DSLR. Would you recommend the S90 as a good sortof between PaS and DSLR camera?
It finally offers HD video. But the camera has also been refined in many areas (hardware + software). It isn't a trivial upgrade, yet the core features of the s90 (excluding HD video) are basically maintained.
Competitors? Nothing this small can shoot this great, so I'd argue it's in a class of its own. The Lumix LX5, for instance, won't fit in your back pocket. And if a camera doesn't pass that test, why not spring for a micro 4/3.
hi! good review and very useful. i've been toying over buying this one or the Canon Powershot SX210. the SX210 doesn't look as good as the S90 and has a plasticky feel to it. but it shoots great HD vid from what i've seen and in 14x zoom. and the pix i've seen are good too...but the S90 exudes quality. so found your comment on the S90 video quite helpful! thankee!>..g
@SweetieGord If you frequently shoot video, then it would be hard to justify buying a camera that doesn't support HD. However, the S90 may shoot subjectively better video in low-light settings due to its faster lens and larger image sensor.

The S90 has been replaced by the Powershot S95.
