how come this movie is in black and white? when Gone with the Wind is in color in 1939.

color was always an option, but more expensive to produce. black & white films were cheaper to shoot.

you could also say black and white adds to the conflict, themes and ideas presented by the play and film. you could say it works on a symbolic level and effect to add meaning to the film and bring out the meaning of the play

The movie itself hasn't dated but the trailer definitely has! It was like they didn't know how to handle this type of picture and gave it the usual, stock, overblown advertising campaign.
