Another one of my "I wanna escape" songs. I wish the guitar had been a little smoother but my fingers were getting sore since I kept screwing this up before I finally made it through to the end.
Funny thing happened after I recorded it and was matching it up to the audio on movie maker. I picked up a what sounded like somone singing a higher background part. I found out it came through the audio on the camera. It must have been some weird echo effect in the room from the strings, not sure how it came through in a high harmony. I thought I would keep it in the opening guitar intro. since I liked how it sounded.
It is most noticeable when I'm playing the D chord, and you should have headphones to hear it clearly.
Just in case it was a ghost, and he wanted to be on my video, who was I to say no?

Lyrics:

SOMETIMES I HAVE TO PUSH, THE WORLD AWAY
BUT ONLY WHEN IT PUSHES ME FIRST.
THE BEST THING FOR ME TO DO IS DRIFT AWAY
OR ELSE IT ONLY MAKES THINGS WORSE
WHEN IT HAPPENS, FOLKS THINK IM CRAZY
STARIN OFF INTO THE DISTANCE, IN A DAZE
NO LONGER LISTENIN TO WHAT THEYRE SAYIN
CAUSE MY MIND IS GONE A HUNDRED MILES AWAY

TO AN OLD FARMHOUSE NO LONGER STANDING
BUILT A LONG TIME BEFORE I WAS BORN
IN MY MIND, IM STANDIN ON THAT OLD PORCH
LISTENIN TO THE WIND BLOW THROUGH THE CORN

IT WAS MY GRANPAS FARM, BACK IN THE DAY.
WHEN WE WERE LITTLE KIDS, WE GO TO STAY
SLEEP IN THEM SQUEAKY BEDS, ON HARDWOOD FLOORS
BUT I WOULD SNEAK OFF DOWN THE STEPS
OUT THE OLD SCREEN DOOR
CAREFUL NOT TO LET IT SLAM, OR MAKE A SOUND
CAUSE IF THEY EVER HEARD A NOISE,
THEY WOULD COME DOWN
AND THERE WOULD BE HELL TO PAY IF I GOT CAUGHT
THEY DIDNT LIKE IT VERY MUCH, WHEN I SNUCK OUT.

GET ON UP THEM STAIRS AND GET ON BACK TO SLEEP.
AND DONT FORGET TO PRAY THE LORD YOUR SOUL TO KEEP
THAT PORCH WILL STILL BE THERE COME THE MORNING LIGHT
BUT TO ME THERE WAS MORE MAGIC IN THE NIGHT

NOW ITS BEEN GONE FOR YEARS, CEPT IN MY MIND
IVE BEEN BACK TO THAT OLD PLACE, AT LEAST A MILLION TIMES
WALK PAST THE OL PIANO, ALWAYS OUT OF TUNE
STEP OUT ONTO THAT OL PORCH, UNDERNEATH THE MOON
SET MY HANDS ONTO THE RAILING, WOOD ALL CRACKED AND WORN
AND I CAN STILL HEAR THAT WIND, BLOWIN THROUGH THE CORN
SO IF YOU SEE ME IN A DAZE, OR THINK MY MIND IS GONE.
I SUSPECT YOU WOULD BE RIGHT, IM BACK ON THAT OLD FARM
OUT ON THAT OLD WOODEN PORCH UNDER THE NIGHT SKY
YOU CANT PUT A PRICE ON WHAT ITS WORTH.
I WOULDNT TRADE THAT MEMORY FOR ANYTHING.
FOR MY FRONT ROW SEAT TO HEAVEN HERE ON EARTH.

  • Another great, very well written song and very well done to boot. Most of my own writing pertains to memories of my youth.

Loved it ! Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you again, and I'm glad you liked it. I think writing about childhood makes for some good songs.

  • John, great song! Good to get back to your channel and hear your music. willy

  • If you don't mind, could you explain in boring detail, the equipement you're using? So far, I'm using a 99.00 camera from Best Buy and that's about it......I really know nothing about the electronics of this game so any input is greatly appreciated.

  • Thanks so much! I appreciate that, and Prine and Goodman have been big favorites of mine ever since the mid 70's.

  • Excellent original tune. Reminds me of the great tunes of John Prine and Steve Goodman. You're a great storyteller.
